In this article, I will be exploring the different Yamaha digital pianos currently available in the market. This will include a brief history of Yamaha digital pianos, followed by a comparison table of the different models, and then a detailed review of each model in case you want to learn more about any in particular.

Yamaha Digital Piano History

Yamaha was a company established in 1887 and founded by Torakusu Yamaha, a Japanese businessman. The company started out producing instruments, especially pianos and reed organs. Before, Yamaha was initially known as Nippon Gakki Corporation and was later renamed Yamaha Corporation in 1987. Yamaha’s history in manufacturing instruments is manifested in their company logo, indicating three tuning forks intersecting one another. This company is currently considered as the top and largest manufacturer of instruments worldwide. Back in 2008, Yamaha and the Austrian Bank agreed to purchase the famous piano company, Bosendorfer. Yamaha plans to continue manufacturing pianos by Bosendorfer in Austria. The latter continues functional operation separately from Yamaha to preserve their original quality. However, they function as a subsidiary company of the Yamaha Corporation. In the year 1959, Yamaha began manufacturing electronic instruments as it introduced its first-ever all-transistor organ. In 1971, Yamaha created its own Integrated Circuit (IC) plant due to exigency, even though the demand was low. Fast forward to 1983, Yamaha introduced its first-ever Clavinova called the “YP-40”, which led to the beginning of what we now know as digital pianos. Today, Yamaha is producing over three dozen models of digital pianos varying in finishes and style.

Yamaha focuses on the idea of enabling its users and artists to adjust every setting with the use of their smartphones via an app called “Smart Pianist,” which is available in both IOS and Android devices. One of the additional features that the CSP series has, which are not found in other competitors and series, is a hundred tones, styles, and built-in songs. • YAMAHA N1X
  • YAMAHA N2
  • YAMAHA N3X

The YAMAHA AvantGrand series is the most expensive and closest digital piano you can get that is highly comparable to owning a grand piano. This series does not imitate the hammer action happening in an acoustic grand piano because it possesses actual hammer action keys. The natural vibration felt whenever playing a grand piano is also present in the AvantGrand series. In addition, the design of the AvantGrand series pianos is similar to that of grand pianos. This piano series enables its users and artists to access Spatial Acoustic Sampling. Their sounds are the same as the Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial grand pianos captured from four other different mic positions and delivered from a multi-speaker sound system.

One of the best features of the CP series is its portability and ease of use. Just recently, YAMAHA released the CP73 and CP88, which is fully loaded with new features such as synthetic ebony and ivory keytops, new sounds, and various additional jacks and ports, to name a few.

  1. MX SERIES

SERIES VARIANTS:

  • YAMAHA MX49 (49 KEYS)

Using a MIDI interface, you can connect these sounds onto your digital audio workstation and observe everything by plugging a headphone into your MX series device. Its users and artist can twist and pull sounds in different methods with the use of the app called “FM Essentials,” available in IOS devices. The MX88, which is Yamaha’s flagship model in this series, will feature a graded hammer standard (GHS) action variant fitting to piano players.  These instruments are perfect to use as stage pianos or in studios.

  • YAMAHA MONTAGE 8 (88 keys)

The Yamaha Montage and MODX series is a compact version of a beginner synthesizer. This type of synthesizer enables its users to have control over the sounds they want to produce. One of the best benefits of these series is they are platform-focused; Yamaha regularly releases updates that help improve the instrument over time. The Montage 8 has a non-graded balanced hammer effect keyboard, while other models only offer the FSX action. On the other hand, the MODX8 has fully weighted keys that are graded hammer standard, making them beneficial to pianists, while other models only offer semi-weighted keys. One of the notable features of the Montage and MODX series is that all of their models have a considerable multi-touch screen display that conveniently helps its user navigate through the many settings, sounds, and features this series has to offer.

  1. GENOS SERIES

INSTRUMENT TYPE: MUSIC WORKSTATION

USER LEVEL: ADVANCED

PRICE RANGE: $5,000-$5,500 (USD)

SERIES VARIANTS:

  • YAMAHA GENOS (76 KEYS)

The Genos Series is Yamaha’s flagship workstation arranger in its collection. This series is premium quality and provides their users a feel of the YAMAHA CFX and C7 grand pianos. This is primarily accessible because of AEM (Articulation Model Element), which produces a realistic sound of the instrument you are playing. This series is a compact and powerful workstation that enables artists to create and accomplish anything from songs, vocal recording, and sound effects.

  1. PSR-S & PSR-A SERIES

INSTRUMENT TYPE: ARRANGER WORKSTATION

USER LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED

PRICE RANGE: $800-$2,000 (USD)

SERIES VARIANTS:

  • YAMAHA PSR-S670
  • YAMAHA PSR-SX700
  • YAMAHA PSR-SX900 (Flagship model)
  • YAMAHA PSR-A3000

The Yamaha PSR series shines in some areas, including producing fine nuances and quirks of instruments such as vibrato, brass falls, guitar, and others. This series controls all these elements via assignable live controllers in a modular wheel and foot pedals. This feature enables the user to control various things and allows them to use these elements during live settings. The Yamaha PSR can be fitted with additional expansion packs that may either provide its user with more sounds or more space to create their personal sounds. Many artists will benefit from the PSR series as this can supply them with accompaniment, arpeggio functions, and arranging tools that make composing songs simpler and more efficient.

Yamaha DGX-660 User Reviews

SoniaD from Little Rock, AR: “For practice and learning. Note Star and Chord Tracker makes learning fun with wireless streaming with UD-WL01.”

GUITARISTA from Nevada : “Having never owned a piano, and only taking one semester of piano in college makes me an “expert” novice. Which means this is perfect for the beginner all the way up to the pro. You wouldn’t take this on stage, but perhaps a permanent fixture in the home or studio. Almost perfect for me because all I wanted was a piano, not being able to afford a “real” piano, this is the next best thing. The piano voices are dead on and the other voice effects are a huge bonus. Great, realistic action and weight. Very nice speaker sound quality. Something a novice can grow into. All the buttons, switches, controls and screens can be intimidating and difficult to learn their functions. After seven months, I just started getting away from “piano” into some of the other sounds. Not by any means a toy!”
